In 1914, Mrs. Scott, an African-American widow of modest means, took an indigent, African-American widow who had no place to live and no one to care for her into her home.  This gesture of kindness and compassion laid the foundation for the Mary Scott Nursing Center.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Jordon once asked, "When do any of us do enough?"  Though essentially an unknown, clearly Mary Scott chose to do what she could.  She reached out, took in a guest, and treated her with kindness, dignity and compassion.  From that random act of charity has grown a legacy of huge proportions.

Through the support of the community and area churches, Mary Scott relocated to a larger home on Garst Street and became a non-profit organization serving primarily African-American men and women with little or no resources.  Friends and supporters included David Rike, the Dayton Foundation, service clubs and churches.

It was 1983 when the Mary Scott Nursing Center relocated to its present facility on Campus Drive in Dayton View.  Mary Scott continues to be one of just a few non-profit minority-owned health care facilities in the state.

Thousands of older citizens have lived out the remainder of their lives in the Christian "home" of the Mary Scott Nursing Center.  They have been and continue to be treated with dignity, honor and respect.

Entertainer Pearl Bailey once said, "People see God every day; they just don't recognize Him."  Come to the Mary Scott Nursing Center and you'll see God...you should recognize him in the faces of the residents, volunteers and employees.
